Christian Huygens
The Wave Theory of Light

Christian Huygens

Huygens lived from 1629 to 1695. Following the death of Descartes, Huygens was the most celebrated mathematician in Europe. He developed the wave theory of light, from focusing on the diffraction and refraction properties he could observe. You may recall "Huygens's wavelets" as the formal basis for explaining these phenomena. And we should also point out that he fought bitterly with Newton over these matters.
