Microsoft provides viewers for the Word and Rich Text Format (RTF) files on Windows PC platforms. The viewers can be downloaded free of charge directly from the Microsoft Web site:
| Platform | Location |
|---|---|
| 32-bit Windows | http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/wd97vwr32.htm |
| 16-bit Windows | http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/wdvw9716.htm |
University Computing Services and Microstore offer educationally priced Microsoft Word to full-time students and UofC faculty members, see http://www.ucalgary.ca/ucs/#Software for further information.
Usually, your browser should be automatically configured to recognize Microsoft Word files when you install Microsoft Word or Word Viewer. However, if your web browser does not recognize RTF files automatically, you will have to update the MIME types registry of the browser. In Netscape 4, choose Edit/Preferences, and go to Navigator/Applications panel. In the applications table, find the entry for "Rich Text Format" (MIME type application/rtf), and choose either the Word Viewer or Microsoft Word.
